Time flies by when you are having fun!

The time flies by when you have fun. Another trainee rotation has passed and a new initiated. The time at the Supply Chain department has been fruitful and I have worked with supplier assurance, continuous improvement and the elimination process. To understand how we manage our suppliers, problems that may occur and how much work is needed to get products with right the quality and on time is definitely something I will take with me.

Next rotation is at the Commercial department where I will work with visualization of new bids and creation of a database to follow-up our business cases. As you can notice, as a trainee one has many opportunities for varied projects within different functions in order to get a holistic understanding of the business. Besides all the interesting projects linked to the business, GKN Aerospace actively contribute to a better society. The trainees have started a new initiative called RiHi (The Refugee integration Hub initiative) with the vision to ease refugees, with engineering background, integration into the Swedish society by acting as a liaison between refugees and the business community. Read more about the initiative on Facebook or e-mail us on info.rihi@gmail.com.

Prolonged rotation with focus on the material flow

Prolonged rotation with focus on the material flow

The global project within manufacturing engineering, as I mentioned in previous post, is proceeding according to plan. To create opportunities and to improve the robustness of our processes, we need to secure knowledge and therefore a number of courses have been available for the entire Manufacturing Engineering function this week. As part of the global project, I have been part of a planning team whose aim was to plan the training week. Courses that have been offered are, for example, statistical process control, problem solving and risk analysis just to name a few. I had the opportunity to attend several courses. The courses contained both theory and practical exercises.

During the trainee period, the plan is to gain knowledge in new product introduction and to work as a manufacturing engineer after the trainee period. The first rotation was supposed to only be in my home department that is responsible for new product introduction. But that is not the case anymore. I will now be involved in the product’s entire material flow from supplier to finished product, and will have one 12 week shared rotation at my home department and the supply chain department. This is to gain an understanding of how we manage the supplier network and how the material flows from suppliers to GKN Aerospace in Trollhättan and how we then manufacture the product before delivery to the customer. At the supply chain department I will work with supplier quality assurance because some suppliers have difficulty supplying components to the right quality and/or quantity. Therefore, we need to develop a plan to ensure what needs to be done at the suppliers to get the desired outcome.

More about my different projects will be available in following posts.

Seven weeks later…

Seven weeks later…

Seven weeks have already passed since I started at GKN Aerospace. My first rotation is at a department responsible for the introduction of new products, estimating cost for new businesses and global projects within GKN Aerospace Engine Systems. It’s at this department where I will start working after the trainee-period.

During the seven weeks I had two assignments. The first assignment is a part of a global project within manufacturing engineering, which aims to enhance delivery precision and cost reduction of poor quality by improving the robustness of our processes and to work in a standardized way throughout the Aerospace division. The second assignment is regarding control reduction of a newly introduced high volume product. The aim is to show that the process is stable enough to remove a control operation.

Yesterday the workshop period ended with a tour of the different workshops. All trainees got to show where they have been working during the workshop period and which value streams they have followed. It was extremely rewarding to share the experiences from various parts of the business and I believe that the experience gained will most likely come in handy during the rest of the trainee period.
